About

Your Millwork & Architectural Woodwork Provider

Jeff Carl originally started his one-man fine furniture and cabinet shop on Lyell Ave in downtown Rochester in 1978. A recent graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology with a BFA in photography, Jeff soon found his calling not in photo, but in the craft of fine carpentry and woodworking. With an eye for detail and a passion for excellence, the work began to come in. It wasn’t long before a few employees were added and the fledgling company began doing commercial work. Relocation to Culver Road took place in 1989. A significant change to the company took place in 1994 when Bob Ferrarone came on board, first as project manager and then as partner. The next major change was registering as a New York State corporation in 1995. The company is still at the Culver Rd location with a full-time staff of estimators/project managers, engineers, skilled machinists, and finishers. And now, all these years later, the calling is the same: exceed our customers' expectations with premium craftsmanship, attention to detail, and lasting quality.

Jeffrey Ellis Carl Cabinetmakers specializes in the manufacturing and installation of custom commercial wood and laminated products, often incorporating glass, metals, stone, embedded lighting, and other exotic materials. Typical jobs may consist of cabinets, counters, reception desks, nurse stations, wall paneling, interior trim, custom furniture, doors & frames, solid surface materials, and wood finishing. Our products are found in the medical, educational, hospitality, public works, professional, retail, commercial/senior housing, and industrial sectors. We work directly with end users as well as general contractors.

Of all the building trades, it is perhaps our work that brings an interior to life. The woodwork and millwork are usually the most visible aspect of all the interior finishes and are therefore often the very definition of the space itself. With this in mind, it is our goal to collaborate with architects, designers, builders, and project owners to bring the imagined vision to life with precision, artistry, and care. We do this with age-old woodworking tools and techniques, combined with the most modern machines, materials, and methods, thus integrating fine hand craftsmanship with the precision and speed of the latest software and CNC machinery.

For general contractors, our scope of work includes Specification Sections:

  • 06200-Finish Carpentry
  • 06400-Architectural Woodwork (Custom Casework with Counters, Reception and Nurse Stations, Window Sills, and Other Interior Specialties)
  • 12300-Modular (or Manufactured) Plastic Laminate or Wood Casework with Counters
  • 12350-Architectural Millwork (Lab Casework & Counters)

We deliver to customers across the North East and the Mid-Atlantic US. Our installation is available in the Western NY area only. Jeffrey Ellis Carl Cabinetmakers has shipped millwork throughout New York, Virginia, Ohio, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Florida, and we even have a job in a natural science museum in the country of Turkey.

Our Facility

Our 16,000 square foot facility is conveniently located on the east side of downtown Rochester. Expressways, both north/south and east/west, are nearby for quick and easy access. We continuously invest in technology to better our manufacturing process and quality. In 2018, we upgraded panel processing machines with a Barbaric robotic storage system, feeding a Felder flat table CNC router and a Stefani automatic edgebander. Now, late 2025 another Felder flat line panel processing system is about to go into production. The finishing department has a Kundig wide belt sander (the Swiss watch of sanders) for flawless veneer and solid wood preparation. A complement of traditional machines (table saws, sliding panel saws, miter saws, shapers, etc) support the rest of the manufacturing process. Visitors are welcome to tour the shop and see the technology and craftsmen and women at work. Please call ahead to schedule your visit.

Our Process

Most projects begin with a detailed set of architectural drawings. Occasionally, there are times when just a designer’s concept sketches are brought to us, and then we are more deeply involved with the development of the job from concept to finished product. This can include design influence, accommodating site conditions, selecting the finishes, and raw materials. Our engineers use Microvellum and AutoCad software to prepare a fully engineered shop drawing package. These drawings are submitted for approval, revised for the customer’s final requirements, and field conditions. Our shop drawings are not just lines drawn on a page to look like cabinets and millwork; they actually contain the manufacturing data, which is then uploaded to the shop machines for production. The manufacturing processes are linked from the office to the shop with CNC machines. There is continuous communication between the office and shop to keep the process moving and up to date.

We are Corian certified and also do our own in-house wood finishing. Stone and metal components are furnished through outside suppliers with whom we have long-standing, proven relationships. You can be assured that our outside suppliers are fully vetted and their standards are as stringent as ours, so your final product from JECCI is of premium quality.

Finally, delivery and installation are coordinated with the customer to meet the job schedule. When you are satisfied, we are satisfied.

Recognition: Bob Ferrarone

Bob first got involved with Jeff as an independent installer of the company’s products. It didn’t take long before it became obvious that Bob was a uniquely qualified individual. With his engineering degree, he was the perfect balance to Jeff’s art background. Bob saw a lot of potential for the company and wanted to be more than an employee. The answer to that was a definite yes! The following years saw the company grow and prosper, though not without growing pains. That growth and success would not have been possible without Bob. Developing new management systems, establishing procedures for estimating and project management, training new employees, and even fixing complex machines that are down for repair, there was precious little that Bob could not do and was willing to do. One of his last and best achievements here was to design and execute the design and contracts for relocating our executive offices from the north side of the building to the east side of Culver Road street front. Bob retired in 2022, and we miss him terribly. Thank you, Bob!
